With technology like smartphones being so inexpensive and pervasive it’s a small wonder that anyone can get anything done without being “connected.” But, that level of connectivity and being tethered to a constant stream of information comes at a cost. It’s difficult to find what people call “inner peace.” Since China eased regulations around religious practices, many people are going back to their roots like Buddhism. One temple had decided to marry Buddhism with technology in a way that is accessible to the modern person.

The Longquan temple created Xian’er, which is a tiny cartoon inspired robot that can hold basic conversations and teach people about life as a monk. Master Xianfan, Xian’er’s creator, has said that “Science and Buddhism are not opposing nor contradicting, and can be combined and mutually compatible.” The little robot can move and navigate by itself. It even has a built in touchscreen that allows for more information to be accessed. The temple hopes that by creating something that is more familiar with modern society, more people can benefit from Buddhist teachings.

“Buddhism is something that attaches much importance to inner heart, and pays attention to the individual’s spiritual world,” he said. “It is a kind of elevated culture. Speaking from this perspective, I think it can satisfy the needs of many people.”
