With Donald Trump’s huge win in the New York primary he is just a stone’s throw from the republican nomination. This is bad news for the two remaining republican nominees John Kasich and Ted Cruz, who is trailing Trump by single digits. Trump is probably one of the most polarizing politicians in recent years, if you can call him a politician. His almost certain victory has spurred an unprecedented roadblock. Both Cruz and Kasich almost simultaneously released statements saying that they will divide their efforts in the remaining states. Cruz will focus on Indiana and Kasich will focus on Oregon and New Mexico. This is not necessarily a path for victory for either incumbent but rather a move to block Trump from getting the 1,237 delegates he needs for the GOP nomination.

This move has been in the works for weeks according to both campaigns. But many experts say that even if this plan works, neither Cruz nor Kasich have enough momentum to get a first ballot victory. Trump is poised to win Super Tuesday with a strong position in Maryland, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Connecticut, and Rhode Island. Trump has publically called the move “desperate.”

He has called the alliance “collusion” and has noted that in many industries, collusion is illegal. He says that by them resorting to this tactic they have revealed themselves to be weak.

Whether the move is desperate or not, the question is; can it work? The short answer is yes, it can technically work and prevent Trump from getting the nomination. The long and much more probably answer is probably not since Trump is strong in the upcoming votes.

IF the pact between Cruz and Kasich works, what happens? It becomes a brokered convention. An event that only happens if no candidate gets the nomination. Basically it becomes a political nightmare full of trading delegate votes and jumping ship and backstabbing. But for Cruz and Kasich it is better to go through that circus than Trump’s inevitable victory if they do nothing.
