Johnny Depp and his new wife Amber Heard just had charges dropped from breaching customs laws in Australia last year. Amber Heard allegedly brought the couple’s two Yorkshire terriers, Pistol and Boo, to Australia without declaring them. In lieu of fines or other punishment the couple instead had to record a video apology that has now gone viral admitting their mistake.

The somber looking couple appeared on the video and recited what seemed like a pre-written and memorized statement from the Australian government. Though there is no proof that they were forced to say anything, if you watch the video it is in a word, painful. It genuinely depicts some form of remorse, but more likely from the fact that they have to make the video than the breach of customs. Many people believe their speech was nothing more than a bit of national propaganda designed to make people think twice about bringing things into Australia.
Their facial expressions and monotone demeanor just don’t match the words that they’re saying. Instead, the couple project fear. Whatever the intent of the video was, it clearly didn’t reach the public as most people just wrote the apology off as a forced punishment and relatively insincere. As an actor, Depp should probably have been able to pull off a more convincing act but maybe that was on purpose.
