The old saying, “Hindsight is 20/20” is often applied to the end of a presidency. Obama’s 8 year reign as president is almost over and he’s been asked many times what he thinks he should have done differently over the course of his presidency. He’s previously declined to answer questions like that but it appears that Obama has had a bit of time to think over some of his more controversial decisions as president. He has previously alluded to some things he might have done a bit differently when interviewed by The Atlantic, but in a more recent interview with Fox News he comes out point blank about what be believes to be his “worst mistake.”

He says that he wishes he had handled the situation with Libya differently. Calling the fallout of Libya his worst mistake. “Probably failing to plan for the day after what I think was the right thing to do in intervening in Libya,” He is careful to say that he doesn’t regret U.S. involvement with Libya but rather that he didn’t adequately plan for the repercussions of such intervention. “When I go back and I ask myself what went wrong, there’s room for criticism, because I had more faith in the Europeans, given Libya’s proximity, being invested in the follow-up,” Obama also noted that he also underestimated “the degree of tribal division in Libya.” One consequence is most likely the rise of ISIS, an extremist group that has committed global terrorist attacks. Obama was known for his generally hands off approach when it came to international relations. His response to Libya is often credited to overwhelming pressure from both the public and other political heavyweights to act. This might be one of the reasons why this particular decision might not have been as well thought out as it should have been. Either way, the fallout will be a problem for the next president and the upcoming election will probably heavily depend on what the candidates plan to do about those consequences.
