With the recent attack in Brussels, people’s values are becoming more transparent. Barack Obama may be on his way out but he is still our president. But where he continues to fight for peace with our enemies abroad the other presidential candidates have made it clear that peace is a forgotten relic of time gone by. Donald Trump by many people’s standards is quite an aggressive candidate on many of his topics including foreign policy. Trump vowed to close U.S. borders to all people from Arab and other Muslim countries. Senator Ted Cruz also wants get tough where it comes to foreign policy. Cruz called for law enforcement to “patrol and secure Muslim neighborhoods.” Furthermore, Cruz plans to make the “sand glow” in the Middle East, promises to “rip to shreds” the Iran nuclear deal that Obama negotiated, and would send the U.S. Navy to confront Chinese leaders who want to control the South China Sea.

Republicans aside, even the democrats call for a more aggressive approach than President Obama. Hilary Clinton distanced herself from solutions involving peace talks. All major front runners are clear on their message that “Obamasim” just isn’t working. Obama won his presidency and eventually a nobel peace prize through the idea that optimism and peace are the way to bring the global community together. Unfortunately, times have changed and if the polls are any indication, people want a leader that can deal a decisive blow to our enemies abroad. Senator Bernie Sanders continues to attract younger voters with his message of a two state solution for Israel and Palestine. His open administration operates with fighting oppression in mind. While not a declaration of peace, his views are far more conservative than other candidates. While he has lost most of the states that have voted so far, many of them were by a very small margin. It seems that the message of combating oppression is where the future of this country lies but it doesn’t look like this year will realize that future.
