Thousands of American’s cheered when Obama announced that due to a revision of overtime pay rules, many more people will qualify. The new rules are pretty in depth but you can find the new ruling here. Normally, you’d think that everyone would be super happy about being able to get paid more for the work they do. But it turns out that this isn’t great news for everyone. The obvious people would be the companies that have to shell out more money, but apparently non-profits would be hurting too.

U.S. PIRG, a coalition of state nonprofits around the U.S., issued a statement last week saying the new overtime regulations would hamstring its efforts to hold corporations accountable. They claim, “Organizations like ours rely on small donations from individuals to pay the bills. We can’t expect those individuals to double the amount they donate,” the group said in its statement. “Rather, to cover higher staffing costs forced upon us under the rule, we will be forced to hire fewer staff and limit the hours those staff can work – all while the well-funded special interests that we’re up against will simply spend more”

Employers warn that people might in fact not even get paid more. They might just lower pay to offset the amount they’d gain in overtime. It might even limit or hinder career advancement. It would be far more difficult to get meaningful promotions or raises since employers would have to take into account how much more they’d have to pay workers now. Overall, it is probably employer’s griping about having to shell out more money, but it’s difficult to say whether any of what they say have any merit. We’ll see once more people get their overtime.
